Career Coaching

We’ve expanded our team to better serve our sending school districts!

Thanks to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s Career Coaching Grant, we were able to hire Adam Pearish as the Area 31 Career Coach!

With nearly a decade of experience in college and career readiness and career/technical education, Adam can help you and your building meet your goals!

Why a Career Coach?

House Enrolled Act 1002-2023 tasked the Commission with developing a Comprehensive Career Coaching and Navigation Framework to provide comprehensive and relevant information about career pathways.

The framework centers on career exploration, engagement, and experience, with milestones embedded for all grade levels.

As the Career Coach for Area 31, Adam is uniquely positioned to support all 11 sending school districts to meet the requirements outlined in the Indiana Career Coaching Framework.

Adam is also a DeBruce Foundation’s Certified Agilities Coach.

How Adam Can Support

Coaching

Adam can push-in to PCC and other classes grades 8-12 to help sending schools meet the yearly Career Coaching Session requirement. Career Discovery Meetings (CDM) are required for every Junior and Senior. As a certified DeBruce Foundation Agilities Coach, Adam can help students identify their work agilities to make more informed career decisions that align to their interests. Adam is proficient using both Naviance and Xello.

Planning

Students in grades 9-12 are required to attend a Career Fair each year. Adam can help the school’s fair coordinator plan and execute a career fair.

Area 31 students will complete this requirement at the Career Center.

Reporting

Adam’s work will be reported to the Commission for Higher Education. A Community Partner account request has been submitted to each school via ScholarTrack. Please approve Adam’s access. More info on data needs will be shared with sending schools once CHE releases further guidance.

Presence

We want to be more present throughout the Area 31 Career District. If you’re hosting an event where families could benefit from learning about Area 31, please invite Adam who may be able to host a table if his schedule allows.

If you/your school is interested in having Adam on your campus, please email Adam directly with your needs/wants.

Career Discovery Meetings

HEA 1002-2023 states students in grades 11 and 12 must meet for at least 30-minutes, in person, with an approved postsecondary education institution, intermediary, employer, or labor organization to discuss future career opportunities and their necessary education levels.

CDM REQS

  • Occur on school property
  • in-person
  • with no more than 5 students at once (there are exceptions)
  • during school hours
  • 30 minutes in length
    • 25 min meeting; 5 mins to log in ScholarTrack

CDM EXCEPTIONS

  • College Admission reps can meet with an unlimited number of students

CDM EXEMPTIONS

  • Participating in a program approved by the student's school in which the student works for an employer or labor organization for part of regular school hours;
  • Receives career coaching services through the career coaching grant

WAYS TO IMPLEMENT

College Admissions Reps

As college admissions reps visit your school, students will just need to sign in on a roster to document their attendance. We suggest a staff member be present to walk students through the CDM logging OR a staff member logs it for students present (eliminates the need for students to know their ScholarTrack login).

Career Speaker Series

Utilizing a homeroom or IMPACT period, schools could schedule career speakers throughout the school year that are aligned to specific career clusters.

Could utilize both industry partners and possible graduates that are still local. Adam would have to be present to provide his services if (1) groups are larger than 5 students and/or (2) an intermediary is not considered an “approved” intermediary.

Leveraging Your Career Coach

Schools that utilize Adam’s services (coaching, planning, etc.) can receive a bulk waiver from the Career Discovery Meeting requirement for the 2024-2025 school year. This allows additional time for school leaders to plan implementation for the 2025-2026 SY.

Have students who need more intensive career coaching services? Adam can meet one on one, in small groups, or classroom size groups of students to discuss career opportunities, complete an Agilities Profiler, and have a better idea of what they may want to do after high school.

Students who receive these services will have the following items on the Career Coaching Framework marked as complete: CDM (waived), Career Interest Assessment (Scholar Success program activity) , and Career Coaching session.
