Cosmetology Students Showcase Creativity and Design Thinking

First-year Cosmetology students at the Area 31 Career Center are diving into an exciting project that celebrates creativity and artistic expression: the "Anything but Hair Challenge." This innovative competition invites students to think outside the box as they transform a mannequin head, initially shaved bald, into a stunning hairstyle and fashion look, drawing inspiration from any fashion or fantasy era.

The challenge emphasizes the Engineering Design Process, engaging students in critical thinking and hands-on problem-solving throughout their projects. Here’s a closer look at the steps they are following:

  • Develop a Concept: Students start by brainstorming and sketching their ideas, laying the foundation for their creative vision.
  • Test Different Materials: Participants experiment with a variety of materials to determine the best options for their hair designs, ensuring they achieve their desired look.
  • Revise the Concept: After testing, students refine their ideas and make necessary adjustments based on their experiments and the materials used.
  • Develop a Final Product: With a clear concept in mind, students bring their vision to life, culminating in a final product that showcases their hard work and creativity.
