CTE Day at the Statehouse: Celebrating the Impact of Career
On February 6, 2025, a collaborative event brought together the Indiana Association of Career and Technical Education (IACTE), career and technical student organizations (CTSOs), Indiana government offices, and state legislators for CTE Day at the Statehouse. This special day was dedicated to showcasing the incredible impact that Career and Technical Education (CTE) has on students, schools, and communities across the state.
The event provided a unique opportunity for students, educators, and advocates to connect with policymakers, share personal stories, and highlight the importance of CTE programs in shaping the future workforce. On the third floor of the Statehouse, just outside the General Assembly, a showcase featured the Best Practices from various high school CTE programs.
Area 31 Career Center proudly represented our community with Criminal Justice and Fire Science programs. The showcase included valuable contributions from faculty and students alike. Joe Brown, director of the ESEC Fire Science program, was joined by students Parker Saxson and Lona Scott to demonstrate the depth of knowledge and skill developed through the program. In addition, Criminal Justice instructors Natalie Beatley and Matt Frazier, along with students Brandon Call, Sofia Hicks, and Addison Yarnell, highlighted the valuable hands-on experience that sets Area 31 apart in preparing students for successful careers in law enforcement and public safety.
The day also featured a special session with state legislators and Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith, where representatives from CTSOs spoke about the personal and professional value of participating in these organizations. Two Area 31 students, Temitope Olaosebikan and Misael Rodriguez, who serve as state officers for SkillsUSA, had the honor of addressing the session. They shared their personal stories and discussed the invaluable role of CTE programs in preparing students for post-secondary education and their future careers.
CTE Day at the Statehouse was an important reminder of the transformative power of Career and Technical Education. It highlighted the commitment of educators and students to making a difference and emphasized the importance of continued support for CTE programs. As we move forward, we look forward to seeing even more opportunities for growth and collaboration in shaping the future of Indiana’s workforce.
