Medical Assisting Students Get Real-World Experience

Medical Assisting students participated in externships and shadowing experiences across multiple clinics for Eskenazi Health, IU West and Hendricks Regional Health. Students complete between 40 to 80 hours in the clinic where they are able to observe and perform duties, including rooming patients, taking measurements of vital signs, conducting blood draws, and even testing urine. Claelle Condestine, a Senior from Speedway High School, was able to conduct a urine test and her first venipuncture (blood draw) on a person at Bainbridge Family Medicine, a Hendricks Community Health clinic. “I thought it was a great experience,” said Claelle. “Externship and shadowing provides a great perspective on the day-to-day life as a medical assistant.”
