Pharmacy Tech: Preparing IV Medications
Preparing a medicated IV (intravenous) bag is a critical process in healthcare settings that requires precision, knowledge, and adherence to safety protocols. Students in the Area 31 Pharmacy Tech program have diligently practiced this essential skill, which is performed daily in hospitals.
While preparing IV medications, students must maintain a sterile work environment. Pharmacy technicians ensure that the work area is clean and free from contaminants by disinfecting surfaces with alcohol and allowing them to dry before proceeding. This step is crucial to preventing infections or complications.
During the medication preparation, students verify that they are using the correct medications by cross-referencing the patient's prescriptions. If the medication is in powder form, they follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reconstitute it with the appropriate diluent. They withdraw the required medication dosage using a sterile and expel any air bubbles before proceeding.
Once the medication is reconstituted, it must be mixed with IV fluid. To do this, students take the sterile IV bag and remove the cap from the port where the medication will be added. They clean the port thoroughly with an alcohol swab to minimize the risk of contamination. Afterward, they insert the syringe into the port and slowly inject the medication into the IV bag, gently mixing it to ensure even distribution. Finally, accurate labeling is essential for patient safety.
Activities like those that set Area 31 program apart from traditional high school courses. These real-world, practical experiences enable students to engage with challenges that mirror what they will encounter in their careers, offering a unique and immersive learning environment.
