Project-Based Learning: Fabricating Industrial Products
Area 31 welding instructor, Andy Holmes, recently reached out to Indiana Steel Fabricating Inc. for a donation of scrap steel for our program. This small inquiry led to a project-based learning opportunity for the students after Indiana Fabricating Inc. proposed a project: the construction of ten fabrication tables. These weren’t just any table. With an average weight of 700 pounds and an estimated cost of $2,000 in materials per table, these tables are not just products of craftsmanship, but also symbols of resilience and determination. The safety of our students was paramount, especially considering the sheer weight and size of the tables. Maneuvering them required more than just strength; it demanded careful coordination and adherence to safety protocols.
This collaboration exemplifies the transformative impact of hands-on learning and industry partnerships. It reaffirms our belief in the power of experiential learning and the potential of every student to rise to the occasion and develop talent skills through forged partnerships within the industry.
