EMS Students Put Stop the Bleed Training into Action

EMS Students Put Stop the Bleed Training into Action

Area 31 Career Center’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) students recently put their classroom learning to work in a new role: helping Ben Davis High School staff practice skills that could save a life.

Led by instructor Melissa Lane, students participated in Stop the Bleed training and practiced bleeding control skills with their classmates. The training gave students an opportunity to move from watching demonstrations to working through the techniques themselves.

The learning continued when Ms. Lane led Ben Davis High School staff through the training during a Late-Start Monday building professional development session. This time, her EMS students took on an additional responsibility. As teachers practiced, students helped check that they were completing the techniques accurately, supporting the instruction Ms. Lane provided.

For students, assisting with the staff training offered another way to reinforce what they had learned. Helping someone else work through a skill calls for careful observation, clear communication and attention to detail. The experience gave students a chance to practice those abilities while contributing to their school community.

The training also created an opportunity for teachers to see Area 31 students apply their developing knowledge beyond their own classroom. With Ms. Lane leading the session and students supporting the practice, career preparation became a shared learning experience.

Through Stop the Bleed, Area 31’s EMS students took another step toward their future careers while helping the adults around them prepare to respond in an emergency. EMS Students Put Stop the Bleed Training into Action
