Integrated Mechanics Students Explore Maintenance at the Zoo

On August 21, 2025, the Integrated Mechanics class took a unique “behind the scenes” trip to the Indianapolis Zoo, gaining hands-on insight into ride maintenance and operations. Students toured both the Skyline ride and the Kombo Family Coaster, exploring the technical systems that keep these attractions running safely and efficiently.

During the Skyline tour, students learned about the ride’s operation, including its 480-volt AC three-phase main voltage, 24-volt DC control voltage, and wireless communication systems. The group also observed the high-wear drive tires, highlighting the importance of proactive maintenance in real-world applications.

At the Kombo Family Coaster, students examined the control cabinet, which houses relays, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and other key components they are studying in class. They also explored the various motors that power the ride up inclines, the sensors that regulate motor engagement, and the pneumatic brake system at the ride’s conclusion. In addition, students gained an overview of the ride’s periodic inspection and maintenance requirements, connecting classroom theory to practical experience in motors, controls, and maintenance record-keeping.
