Course Title: Dental Assisting

Course Instructor: Jessica Holmes

Number of Credits: 3 per semester

Semesters Offered: 2 semesters

Prerequisites: Algebra 1 and English 10

Eligible Grade Levels: 12th

*Student must purchase leather, all white sneakers that cover the entire foot.
*Students are required to wear ceil blue scrubs.
*Students are required to wear all white sneakers that cover the whole foot.
*Students are to provide a TB Test with results and a copy of Hepatitis Vaccination Series.

Course Competencies and Requirements

  • One of the fastest-growing occupations in the nation
  • Receive hands-on training to help you develop the skills necessary to become a Dental Assistant; many of these skills will transfer to additional studies to become a Dental Hygienist or Dentist
  • Perform duties such as instrument sterilization, tray setups, four-handed dentistry, equipment maintenance, impressions, model trimming, charting, taking radiographs, infection control procedures
  • Required to wear uniforms and white leather tennis shoes
  • Required to provide a TB and Hepatitis B health certificate

This program is not dual credit, but will prepare students for the National Entry Level Dental Assisting (NELDA) Certification Test. Students are also eligible to test for the Indiana Radiology License after successful completion of both semesters of the Dental Assisting program and passing the NELDA exam. This will allow the student to work legally/competently after graduation.

Academic Standards for Success

  • Read and comprehend science and technical texts within a range of complexity appropriate for grades 11-CCR independently and proficiently.
  • Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 11-12 texts and topics.
  • Use vocabulary skills, context, roots, prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of words.
  • Solve abstract and practical problems by applying and adapting a variety of strategies. Monitor progress and evaluate answers in terms of questions asked.
