Year 1-Early Childhood Education I

Course Title: Early Childhood Education I

Course Instructor: Lauren Jordan

Number of Credits: 3 per semester

Semesters Offered: 2 semesters

Prerequisites: Child Development  and Adv. Child Development Preferred and Algebra 1 and English 10

Eligible Grade Levels: 11th and 12th

Dual Credits: Ivy Tech Community College – 9 Credits

Course Competencies and Requirements

  • Employment of preschool teachers is expected to grow by 15% from 2021 to 2031, faster than the average for all occupations
  • Concentration on a child’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development, and skills in instruction and observation
  • Emphasis placed on the development of skills and techniques for providing appropriate environments and care for young children
  • Participation is required at Giant Preschool Learning Center (ages 3, 4 and 5) and Chapelwood Elementary school: observing, teaching, and working one-on-one with students
  • Students must complete the following: physical, TB test and documentation, and an Indiana State Police Criminal History, Health and safety modules (1-4), child abuse and neglect
  • The following training will be provided in class: First Air, CPR, and Universal Precautions

Year 2-Early Childhood Education II/Work Based Learning

Course Title: Early Childhood Education II

Course Instructor: Judith Lowery

Number of Credits: 3 per semester

Semesters Offered: 2 semesters

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Early Childhood Education I, Teacher Recommendation, ECED 100, 101, and 103

Eligible Grade Levels: 12th

Dual Credits: Ivy Tech Community College – 3 Credits

Course Competencies and Requirements

  • Work and receive high school credit while gaining experience for CDA credentialing
  • Teacher recommendation is required for second year enrollment and participation in the Work Based Learning program
  • Personal transportation required to jobsite
  • Grades, classroom performance, and attendance are reviewed before acceptance in the second year Work Based Learning program
  • Students will be required to attend a 30 minute meeting at Area 31 with Instructor weekly
  • Students will apply and take the CDA Test and complete the CDA Certification Visit
  • Students work in a Level 3 or 4 Paths to Quality Preschool, in the community

Dual Credit Information

Dual credit offerings are subject to change at the discretion of postsecondary partners, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, The Indiana Department of Education, or the Indiana Office of Career and Technical Education.

Academic Standards for Success

  • Read and comprehend college level texts and other articles within a range of complexity for grades 11-CCR independently and proficiently.
  • Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 11-12 texts and topics.
  • Use vocabulary skills, context, roots, prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of words.
  • Solve abstract and practical problems by applying and adapting a variety of strategies. Monitor progress and evaluate answers in terms of questions asked.
