Year 1-Pre-Nursing

Course Title: Pre-Nursing

Course Instructors: Area 31:Dayna Atkinson and Toni Watson, Brownsburg: Kristine Ringelsten

Number of Credits: 14 credits

Semesters Offered: 2 semesters

Prerequisites: Algebra 1 and English 10

Eligible Grade Levels: 11th & 12th

Dual Credits: Ivy Tech Community College--14 credits

Ivy Tech Community College credits may be earned in the following courses if the student completes the course with a grade of A or B and passes Accuplacer test in the areas of math, reading, and writing.

Course Competencies and Requirements

  • Welcome to the high demand health care field
  • Build foundational skills in preparation to enter the medical field: medical, dental, laboratory, or nursing
  • Focus on medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, professional development (career investigation, job search, medical hands-on tasks, leadership, etc.), and Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) training
  • Grades, classroom performance, and attendance are reviewed before acceptance in the second year
  • Following CNA classroom training, students have the opportunity to complete required clinical experience
  • Clinicals must be completed at an approved health care facility under the supervision of a licensed nurse – clinical locations will be appointed by teacher
  • At this time, there is not a cost associated with the clinical training
  • A letter will be sent home in June that will list all prerequisite requirements. This letter will contain detailed directions to guide you through this process. All requirements must be completed before the first day of school. Requirements are listed below. Note: all costs are subject to change.
    1. Criminal Background Check ($21.00)
    2. Two Tuberculosis Tests ($25.00)
    3. Physical exam ($25.00)
    4. Purchasing of uniforms at designated retailer ($60-80)
  • Uniform compliance is required on the first day of classes

 

Year 2-Pre-Nursing Capstone

Course Title: Pre-Nursing Capstone

Course Instructor: Scott Borah

Number of Credits: 3 per semester

Semesters Offered: 2 semesters

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Pre-Nursing

Eligible Grade Levels: 12th

Dual Credits: None

Course Competencies and Requirements

  • On the job training; work in a health-related environment
  • Students must furnish their own transportation to job sites

Academic Standards for Success

  • Read and comprehend science and technical texts within a range of complexity appropriate for grades 11-CCR independently and proficiently.
  • Understand the organization of a reading passage, and identify the main and supporting ideas.
  • Use vocabulary skills, context, roots, prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of words.
  • Express mathematical ideas precisely and communicate them coherently and clearly in the language and notation of mathematics.

NOTE: Required prerequisites include the successful completion of Algebra I and English 10 for academic credit.

NOTICE: Students in this program may be assigned to a Brownsburg or Wayne Township location based on considerations such as program enrollment numbers and the student’s home high school. The Area 31 Enrollment Committee makes enrollment decisions, and placement decisions are made by Area 31 Career Center administration.
