Course Requirements and Competencies
- Be a pharmacy technician and help licensed pharmacists provide medication and other healthcare products to patients.
- Pharmacy Technicians work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist to prepare prescription medications. Technicians provide customer service and perform administrative tasks, including working with insurance. Pharmacy technicians have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings such as community, long term care and hospitals. Common tasks and duties include:
- Preparing new prescription and refill requests for patients
- Dispensing medication to patients per the prescription, or provider’s orders
- Packing and labeling a prescribed medication
- Processing insurance claims
- Tracking inventory
- Preparing compounded medications using sterile and non-sterile processes
- Filling automated dispensing machines
- Repackaging of bulk medications
- Students learn about patient confidentiality-HIPAA, law and ethics governing pharmacy practice, as well as, standard operating policies and procedures to ensure adherence to state laws.
- Tasks and technical skills include dose calculations required for proper medications dispensing and filling.
- Tasks and technical skills include arithmetic calculations required for dosage determinations.
- Job shadowing and other work-based learning activities may be included.

Academic Standards for Success

Priority enrollment is given to students who have successfully completed prior coursework in this associate degree-granting Area 31 Early College Career Center program.
